Knitwear Care

EVERYDAY CARE FOR YOUR  KNITWEAR

Your treasured knitted garments deserve the utmost care. With just a little attention and proper handling, you can preserve the luxurious feel and appearance of your fine knits for years to come. This comprehensive care guide provides essential tips on maintaining, cleaning, and storing your cherished pieces, ensuring they remain as stunning as the day you first wore them. Follow our expert advice to keep your  knitwear in pristine condition season after season.

How to wash your knitwear

At Suermondt Knitwear, we understand the importance of proper care for your knitwear pieces. To maintain their timeless elegance and luxurious feel, follow these 3 easy tips on how to wash knitwear.

  1. Start by gently handwashing your knitwear in lukewarm water with a mild detergent, ensuring thorough but gentle cleansing.
  2. Avoid wringing or twisting the fabric; instead, gently press out excess water using a towel.
  3. Lay your knitwear flat to dry on a clean, dry towel, reshaping it if necessary to maintain its original silhouette.

How to prevent and remove pilling

Pilling is where the fibres break up and form little fuzzy bobbles. A small amount of pilling is normal with every new cashmere garment due to everyday wear. This is a natural characteristic of cashmere and not a sign of poor quality. To minimise pilling, gently wash your garment to remove loose fibers. If pilling occurs, use a special cashmere comb by laying your garment flat and gently brushing the comb over affected areas, especially high-friction spots like elbows, underarms, and shoulders. Regularly comb your cashmere, even if there is no visible pilling, to remove loose fibers. Additionally, avoid wearing cashmere against rough textures, sharp metal accessories, or rough leather bags to prevent snagging and pilling.

How to avoid snagging

All our patterned items are created using the traditional fair Isle technique.  The unused colour is carried across the back of the knitting creating a ‘float’. Jewellery can get caught on these floats, so to avoid snagging we advice taking jewellery off before putting the item on or off.

How to store your knitwear

To preserve the delicate fibers of your knitwear, refrain from hanging your garments, as this can distort their shape over time. Instead, store them folded in acid-free tissue paper or a cloth bag to safeguard their pristine condition.  To deter moths, use cedar balls in your wardrobe and drawers. Additionally, ensure your garments are clean before storage, as dirt can attract moths more readily.
